Gingerbread Cookies

It snowed on Saturday, and I’ve two small boys that need to move, so at 8 a.m. we bundled up, grabbed our sleds and headed for the terribly named Suicide Hill (a very small hill in our neighborhood park). We must have been out there for an hour or so having a complete blast. Once our noses had turned Rudolph-red, and our hands and ears ached from the cold we headed back home. To speed up the journey I pulled them both on the sled all the while they threw snowballs at the back of my head (they’re darling). When we got home I made them hot cocoa, and put on The Secret Life Of Pets. I then ran into the kitchen and started to prep for cookie baking. When I was ready to go I called out to my boys to see if they wanted to be my little kitchen helpers. They didn’t even answer me thanks to being tuckered out from our early morning snow adventure. Hooray! I get to bake alone! This is the best snow day ever! For the next two hours I drank coffee, listened to Christmas carols and baked delicious, chewy gingerbread cookies. All by myself. Continue reading →

Brigadeiros

Someone stole my camera. I got it back, thank goodness, but the culprit hasn’t been found yet. He did take a few selfies, so I’ve some clues.

Exhibit A: Small feet.

I think I can outrun him, if need be.

Exhibit B: Half of a face with hair that is far too long (his mother probably has been really busy lately making this season merry and bright for her kids, and keeping the house somewhat clean, and making sure everyone is fed, and binge watching The Crown.)

Oma’s Sugar Cookies


There’s nothing quite like a good sugar cookie. Oma’s sugar cookies, a recipe I stumbled upon while reading the novel Bread Alone, are delicious and intriguing. After all, they contain a secret ingredient… cream of tartar. Cream of tartar is most commonly used as a stabilizer in whipped egg whites. It is also an important ingredient in Snickerdoodle cookies, which give the cookies its signature “tang” and perfect pillowy texture. Because this sugar cookie contains cream of tartar its texture is crisp on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside, and puffs up just a little in the middle. Continue reading →

Grandma Sylvia’s Salt Butter Cookies

Salt butter cookies are buttery, half cookie balls sandwiched together with a chocolate, or in this case, Nutella filling. They are the kind of cookie you’ll find yourself eating in your mom’s laundry room after stumbling upon a hidden batch all the while the family Christmas party is carrying on upstairs. Then your sister will barge in looking for that holiday tablecloth your mom asked her to find, and see that you’re eating most of the extra salt butter cookies. She promptly closes the door, and happily joins in on this impromptu eating fest. You hardly speak to each other, maybe giggle a little when you hear a guest upstairs ask “where did Liz and Amanda go?”. Finally, you’ll see that the plate is clean, so you find a good hiding place for it, grab the tablecloth before your sister does, and head back upstairs. You don’t eat much dinner that night because you’re  “staying on your Weight Watchers points”. “Dieting is not allowed during the holidays, Liz!” I know, I know. But then dessert rolls around and hey! your mom takes out the other plate of salt butter cookies. “Diet starts tomorrow!” you exclaim as you grab a handful.
