Disney World 2016!

Disney World 2016! IMG_3207 (2)

It’s a rite of passage for parents to take their children to Walt Disney World (or Land).  We were fortunate to take a trip to the most magical place on earth this past January.  Because of how expensive Disney World can be, we were only going to stay for 3 nights.  However, as soon as we landed our airline informed us via email that our departing flight home had been cancelled due to the enormous blizzard that was about to hit the north east.  Our tiny trip turned into a week-long adventure.  Yippee!  Unfortunately, we can’t eat for the rest of the year since we spent our entire savings and the kids’ college funds on this vacation, but who cares?!  We went to Disney World! 2016! Sprinkle Cake

Sprinkle Cake 042 (2)

Cameron turned 6 years old on Friday.  That means that I’ve been a mom for 6 years now.  I also haven’t had a good nights sleep in 6 years. I’ve anxiously and irrationally worried, cried for no reason, and rarely showered during these past six years. For 6 years I’ve longed for some time alone only to be home sick for my kids when I found myself alone.  I’ve yelled a lot, sighed a lot, yawned a lot, and drank a lot more wine since February 2010.  For 6 years now most of the conversations I’ve had with adults are about kids (my kids, their kids, kids in the news, my kids again). I look at the world differently now. I’m scared a lot more.  I also love a lot more.  I made Cameron a sprinkle cake for his birthday because I love him to the moon and back and a billion times around the world, and because these have been the best 6 years of my life.  Continue reading →

Little Love Cakes

Little Love Cakes 032 (2)

Oh, my little love cakes, you are so cute.  It’s too bad that all of my boyfriends cannot enjoy you. My husband and youngest are allergic to eggs, and my oldest explained to me very clearly that he was more of a “chocolate person”. Therefore, this weekend I will make my vegan chocolate cake with strawberry frosting for the most important men in my life, but I will save you, little love cakes, as a sweet, Valentine’s gift to me. Huzzah! Continue reading →

Hot Buttered Pretzels

Hot Buttered Pretzels 040 (2)

A hot buttered pretzel tastes exactly how it sounds.  It has a crispy, salty, buttery exterior with a chewy interior.  It’s the perfect snack with a mug of cold beer.  My son Wesley even loves them, and he doesn’t eat anything.  Really. He’s in the 2 percentile for weight.  It’s been a stress, but let’s not talk about that right now.  I think what I love most about making these hot buttered pretzels, besides getting to eat them, is the sense of wonder I feel at every stage of this particular baking process.  I usually feel this way when I make any sort of bread.   I love watching the bubbles pop up to the surface after I’ve mixed the yeast with the warm water.  I love how the dough texture transforms right under my hands while I knead it.   I love how I can tuck a small ball of dough under a towel and two hours later it will puff up into a beautifully smooth pillow of air.  Bread baking is all science, but it feels like magic, and I love that.    Continue reading →
