Lime Sablé Sandwich Cookies

Recently, I have been taking Bar Method classes with my good friends Vanessa and Melanie. The class begins with arm exercises using free weights, and then good old fashioned push ups. It’s horrible. Then we move to the barre and begin squatting up and down while on our tippy toes. When our legs begin to burn and our muscles begin to shake the teacher gets happy. “Keep up the shaking, Liz!”, she screams. I want to yell back, “This is upsetting, Gail!”, but I don’t because I’m a professional people-pleaser. Things look promising when it’s ab exercise time. We get to lie down on mats! But the joy is fleeting because ab workouts hurt. Finally, we finish the hour long class with Back Dancing– lying on your back and moving your tushy (i’m a mom of young kids) up and down. I’ve nothing bad to say about Back Dancing. It is what it is. Then we stretch. Using a strap we stretch our legs while still lying on the ground. One day I stretched my foot all the way to Vanessa’s face, and I carefully touched my big toe to her nose. She smiled and then tickled my foot. I love her for that. Anyway, long story short, I’ve been flexing a lot more in front of the mirror these days. Let’s make some lime sablé sandwich cookies! Continue reading →

Egg And Bacon Pie

It’s February, and as a food blogger I should be rolling out all of my sweet treats to you like heart-shaped meringue,  Little Love Cakes, or the ever seductive Nipples Of Venus.

Instead, I made you an egg and bacon pie.

I put a heart on it, but that’s just a tiny, romantic embellishment. This savory pie is made with nothing but love– salty, bacon-y, buttery, cheese-y love. In celebration of love, I first made this pie to enjoy while watching Harry and Megan’s royal wedding back in April. See, there’s Oprah.

I made it again recently because my resolution for this year is do what lights me up, and eating food encased in flaky pastry lights me up right now. Sure, two out of the three men in my life are completely allergic to egg and bacon pie, but they say you can’t fully love someone until you love yourself first, so…

Cinnamon Scones

Oh, cinnamon scone, you may not be as attractive as your third cousin twice removed, the croissant, but you sure sparkle in your own way. I love how easy going you are. It’s a cake walk mixing you up. And even though you appear crumbly in the beginning you always remind me that “April showers brings May flowers”. I love how low maintenance you are. If I want to bake you later you’re cool with just chillin’ in the freezer until I’m ready. If I baked you yesterday, and today a friend comes over for coffee you’re all like, “It’s okay! Just pop me in a 350º F. oven for 10 minutes, and I’ll act all freshly baked and stuff.” Seriously, you’re my best friend, cinnamon scone. You and this damn good martini I’m drinking right now.   Continue reading →

East 62nd Street Lemon Cake

So far, this January has been great! It’s surprising because I usually hate January. It might just be luck; after all, there are good times, and there are bad times. I suspect, however, that it’s a change in my perspective that has made this month so good. I started off the year with one resolution, and that was to do what lights me up. Well, 21 days in and I have kept that promise. I’m reading my third book of the year (I read a ghost story, then a romance, and now I’ve started one about a WWII spy). I’m on my phone 25% less than last year, and plan to get that percentage even higher as the year goes on. I stopped drinking for 19 days. Then I drank two fabulous martinis to celebrate not drinking for 19 days. I’m in another play for my local community theater! And, of course, I’ve been baking. Lots of baking, and lots of learning about baking. East 62nd Street Lemon Cake is a perfect example. I made this delicious cake a few times. I played around with the recipe, tweaking it here and there. What has emerged from my oven is an exquisite pound cake with a dark, sugar-crusted exterior, and a light, fluffy, lemony flavored interior. It is wonderful. And so is January.   Continue reading →
